So I’ve just become an aunt for the first time and I want to get something for the little man that is something meaningful to actually keep.

Normal presents are covered, I’ve got them a little keepsake box, practical every day stuff sorted etc. This is something which doesn’t have to be now - think of it more like a christening gift but for a child that won’t actually be christened.

Now obviously I can think of buying something or commissioning something (handmade blankets etc.) but it seems somewhat a waste to have a skill (or at least be learning one) and not putting it to good use for this kind of occasion.

Is there an item anyone can think of that would make a good gift? Doesn’t need to be “useful” necessarily, just something that could be appreciated down the line. My mother thought I could make a something like a passport holder? Open to ideas!

    Wallet

    Pencil Case/Pouch

Tool pouch/holster/bag: You could add good tools to it for when he starts becoming more self-reliant. Screw driver, pliers, hammer, multi tool etc. Try to buy tools that don’t have plastic or rubber since they degrade over time.

    Valley Tray

Oh building up a nice set of tools and accessories I can make for them over time would actually be a pretty fun idea!

A little late to reply, but thought I’d add my two cents.

Something that can be appreciated sooner: booties/mocs, mittens, and/or a trapper cap. These can all be lined with sheepskin or sherpa if they’re in a colder climate or flannel if they’re somewhere a little warmer.

Something that can be appreciated later: wet molded trays or bowls. These can also be tooled and painted if desired. Buckleguy sells premade molds, and Corter Leather has good guides on YouTube.

Something more for the parents: a tooled photo album cover.

If your budget allows for it: a ring. I’ve got a ring with my initials on it, 30+ years later

I think I’d want to do something a bit more ambitious, thats just one tiny scrap of leather and like, two stitches, unless you were thinking of some kind of embellishment to it that I’m missing.
