To those who are on the mentality of ‘‘What does Haaland have to do to win it?’’ It’s being a better player than arguably the best player oat in a year with good stats + remarkable playmaking and an all timer World Cup.

However ruthlessly efficient Haaland can be he will always be at least a tad in disadvantage to a player who can move you with their game. I can see him taking a lot of B’Dors home in the next few years so long as the more skillful/complete players, Mbappe being the prime contender for that competition.

Of course big games also matter and while I think Haaland vs Arsenal was his best game by far of the season his contribution in the CLKOs quieted down from the second round of QFs when people and major voters start really scrutinizing performances.

All in all I’d put Rodri above Haaland for the year and not because of his CL winning goal but rather how absolutely key and irreplaceable he has become in a team that used to seemingly always win regardless of who’d play.

Main problem for Haaland was he wasn’t at the WC in a WC year. Even if he scored 100 goals it wouldn’t have mattered. Maybe if Norway had managed to qualify he’d have a shot

Absolutely deserved for both. A lot of crybabies in this comment section that haven’t watched Messi outside a few games this season

To those of y’all saying Messi won the World Cup, therefore he should win it, what about Muller in 2014? Silver ball and silver boot, won the Bundesliga along with the dfb pokal, but ended up 5th in the ballon d’or.

To those arguing that Modric set a precedence about the World Cup taking priority, it came hand in hand with a UCL 3peat. Messi’s World Cup triumph came alongside yet another humbling ucl ro16 exit. The French league isn’t serious with the way psg operate + he was outscored by Alexander Lacazette, who could barely manage 4 epl goals in his last season with arsenal.

The only reason Messi wins over Haaland is pure PR rather than sporting merit. I’m saying this as a Manchester United fan, who’d hate to see a city player win a ballon d’or as much as anyone.

It’s 7 games over a long season and some players will never have a chance because of where they are born.

You’re making it seem like it’s just 7 meaningless friendlies. The World Cup is the most iconic and prestigious tournament across all sport. Matches there are obviously going to be prioritised.

The champions league is a more difficult competition to win than the world Cup, depending on your nationality.

Who played more difficult games? Argentina in the world Cup or Man city winning the Champions League?

If you are born in Uzbekistan your chances to become a football professional are also less likely than being born in France. So what’s the deal, that’s life. If you are unlucky that your country are no World Cup title contenders than your chances are just small every 4 years - you can still win it 3 times in-between.

While true re the 7 games…the lauded CL knockouts are the exact same (7 games). For so many years we’ve heard talk about how CL knockouts are what matters and where the best play (a point I only half agree with - there are often some very average teams in the latter stages of the CL).

In reality there are only ever about a dozen or so big club games a season (top of table league clashes, CL knockouts and top seeded CL group games). And in WC/Euro/Copa years there’s another 6-7 games…ie an 50% extra important games (and for many these games, in particular WC games, are far more important than all but the very latter stages of the CL).

some players will never have a chance because of where they are born.

I don’t think that’s true anymore if a country like Morocco made it to the semi finals.

You can boil down pretty much every tournament if you have an agenda. Mbappe and Haaland literally play in oil state clubs that can buy any megastar player they want, Mbappé never won a CL and Haaland ghosted in pretty much every finals and semis but was still able to get by because the Man City management has infinite money for players.

Kind of hard to credit the WC when he didn’t do much and was given the most PKs ever in a WC. Overall, Messi had a sub-par year and a gifted WC will result with a gifted Balon D or yet again.

I really dont get messi winning it.

Didnt really do all that much for PSG last season. Played in the leagues cup for Inter Miami with a few appearences in the MLS.

He did win the world cup with Argentina but ww should really stop with the whole focus being on him, there was a whole squad who contributed. Martinez was a stand out just off the top of my head.

Pains me to say this as a united fan but Haaland broke records last year, him and his team won a treble. Any other year he would be nailed on to win it.

Anyone who thought Haaland had a chance after Messi won the world cup was simply a crazed CR7 fan or just living in denial…no surprise here
