“I’m pretty sure if you die the cancer dies at the same time, that’s not a loss thats a draw”.
I don’t like this losing expression. As if they’re a faliure.
Depression is a real monster to deal with. Speak to mental health professional, if you need antidepressants, take them. As Someone who is with depression all my adult life most people don’t know and i have gotten go at hiding it. And always check in on your friends and family.

Once you lose a child, your life will never be the same, no matter how much money, success and friends around you.

That’s the one reason I cut some slack to CR on his meltdown before going to Saudi Arabia. Yea he has personal responsibility for the bridges he burned, but I can understand to some extent why he wasn’t thinking with clarity.
Agreed. I’ve seen it firsthand with my younger brother and what it did to my family. There is not a single pain that comes even close to losing your child way before their time. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.

Robert Enke was a great goalkeeper and an even better person (here is an article on how Enke saved the career of a young Sven Ulreich when he went through tough times after being harshly criticized).
His story is all too human and shows how depression can get us all no matter how rich or what status we might have. Please get all the help in the world if you feel like you are depressed. There is no shame in any of it.
This also a reminder for us fans who should always realize that players are also just humans.

I remember very vividly how discussions around the football business erupted and how ppl had hoped we as a society would also be more open towards mental health related issues.
While I do think society as a whole has become more accepting and more open (altho even that isnt nearly where we need to be, specifically in Germany), the football business has largely forgotten this incident and I think the way Maguire is treated publicly is a perfect example of failing to learn lessons.
We only talk about treating footballers as humans when tragedy happens, but until then they’re merely objects for entertainment

The whole attention seeking culture of the internet where the loudest voice gets the most attention leads to bullying being so incredibly accepted for some reason
Not saying im perfect, but i really dont like how accepted it is to casually have the entire internet bully certain players week in week out. I dont think most people could handle what theyre going through
14 years ago, I was 12 years old without a care in the world. I heard about Enke’s passing in the news, and my child-self could not fathom how one could possibly make that decision. 14 years and many pivotal moments later, and even though I can’t claim to understand what he went through as an individual, I would like to say, Robert, I’m sad that you’re gone, but I understand.
Depression is serious and treatable. I hope you all take good care of yourselves and seek out resources when things get hard. Let’s honor those who have lost their lives to depression by getting the help we need and deserve.

I was in 6th/7th grade and to this day no “celebrity” death had an impact on me quite like Enke’s death. He was universally liked in Germany and as a massive football fan this was a big shock for 12 year old me. R.I.P.
This hits hard everytime I read about Enke’s story the pain he must have felt…what a great loss such a great goalkeeper he was and a great father.
I remember this like it was yesterday. This and Gary Speed the following year kickstarted a dialogue still going to this day, they did not die in vain.
