Late Stage Capitalism@lemmy.world•In the wealthiest country on Earth.
52·1 day agoThere’s a bunch of articles with conflicting details. It does look like the facility tried a few different avenues before evicting her, but I haven’t seen a report mentioning involvement from a healthcare professional trained to handle situations like this. Every article does make it sound like that’s exactly what she needed though. It’s also entirely possible that when she said she thought she was going to die soon, she was referring to the potential mold issue she had been complaining about. I don’t think the article you linked mentions anything about that. I could be wrong though since I read a few.
There’s also this quote from another article:
Ms Fitzgerald, who was interviewed in jail while dressed in an orange jumpsuit, tearfully refuted the claims. Asked about why she would not pay the rent, the woman, who was handcuffed and appeared to have bruises up her arms, said of a housing facility employee: “She wouldn’t take it, that woman blamed me for the mould.” She added: “I paid my September rent and when she decided she was going to put me out, she wouldn’t accept any rent after that.”
The truth is probably somewhere between the two accounts. But honestly, that’s beside the point. Even if the living facility’s version was completely accurate, a 93 year old woman should not have ended up bruised and dragged out of her home by police just because she withheld rent for two months and refused to follow an order to vacate. Full stop.
Don’t you put that evil on KDE, Ricky Bobby!!
If KDE was a woman… I’d take her out for a 3 course meal, split the bill bc she don’t need no man to take care of her (or her baby), drive her home using the scenic route, walk with her from the car to her front door, then ask for consent before giving her a goodnight kiss

ADHD@lemmy.world•Is it possible for us with ADHD to date an avoidant?English
3·4 days agoThe best advice I can give is to make it as easy as possible for them to talk to you. Try to be as perceptive as you can. I’ve been in a lot of similar situations, and when I could tell something was definitely wrong, I eventually realized there were better approaches than asking, “Is everything okay?” I started saying things like, “What’s wrong, and how can I help?” instead. That kind of phrasing made it easier for them to see that I wasn’t just checking whether they wanted to talk - I genuinely wanted to talk about it with them.
Try not to overdo it though, especially at first. Let them keep whatever they want to themselves. Leading by example can be helpful too. If they ask you whether something’s wrong and it’s something small you don’t need to talk about, kindly tell them you’d rather not talk about it. It might seem obvious to you that you can acknowledge something’s wrong without having to open up immediately, but it might not be obvious to them. And you can always explain it later if you want to.
It’s also important to remember there’s a reason they avoid things. If they know they’re the avoidant type, see whether they’re also the type who’d want to figure out why, together. Maybe they’ll even want to help you figure out why you tend to overshare (beyond the ADHD). That’s important too. Let them reciprocate the help as much as possible.
Again, try not to overdo any of this. It’s a delicate balance. You will overstep sometimes, and you may have to be the one who notices that as well. When you think you might have overwhelmed them, give them some space. That’ll probably be more helpful than an immediate apology. You should apologize eventually, but only once they’re no longer overwhelmed. That’s also a good time to show them you’re not just sorry. You genuinely want to get better at being there for them in the way that works best for them.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•NovaCustom launches privacy SHIFTphone (degoogled with iodéOS and hardware kill switches)
15·24 days agoAm I missing something here? The phone can be bought from the manufacturer for €650 and this company is trying to flip that same phone, but with a custom rom pre-installed for €950? So it’s essentially a €300 upcharge to have someone else flash the custom ROM for you. There’s also an automatic installer available for download on the ROMs website, so people wouldn’t have to mess around with ADB or anything if they wanted to do it themself. Most of what’s mentioned about graphene is also BS and the whole write up is just riddled with misinformation.
Please tell me I’m missing something bc if I’m not then no one should buy a single thing from this company.
Edit: OP has a business relationship with this company

Games@lemmy.world•While we eagerly await the second coming of Steam Machines, it's worth remembering what a gloriously awful mess Valve got itself in over a decade agoEnglish
31·25 days agoThe goal of marketing is to get as many people as possible to be aware that a company’s product exists. These articles are doing just that, for free.
Initial sales will probably take a hit bc of the negative articles. I don’t think they’re being written bc valve decided to stick with the same name though. The articles are probably being written bc negative headlines get clicks.
If the new steam machine proves to be a solid product this time around then gamers are going to buy it. If it’s such a solid product that it manages to turn a product line that was once associated with failure and negativity into a product line that’s associated with success and positivity then I really can’t think of anything better the new steam machine could do for valve’s brand. The (hypothetical) articles comparing the huge (hypothetical) success of the new steam machine to the dramatic failure of the past will also be a bit easier to write a headline for. More free marketing.
