also, NATO is an autonomous defense alliance. it is by itself no threat against russia or any other nation. NATO will not attack russia or anyone first. any NATO member which does will not be helped by NATO. in theory russia could even join NATO and be part of the alliance. russia however is not a member and has therefore no say in who may join.
