Did they seriously just unironically compare themselves to one of the most oppressive, xenophobic, militaristic and genocidal states of antiquity? What lack of history education does to an MFer.
And Lykurgos maybe created a sturdy legal framework, but he literally included that it should never be changed ever. And it largely didn’t. Which is partly why Sparta declined and got destroyed in the end, because it couldn’t adapt itself to the changes around it.

You forgot “most overrated”. Sparta only excelled on one olympic discipline - chariot racing. Not in any disciplines related to warfare, lul.
In Spartas case it wasn’t just weapons: Many classical olympic disciplines are related to stuff you had to do in the army.
Marathon: March long times, with your gear.
Sprint: Charge attacks. Or retreats if you’re among the peltasts.
Pankraton: Close combat and endurance of said close combat.
Various throwing disciplines: You’re a Peltast, Harry.
Chariot racing: Nothing, Greece had no history in chariot warfare. Too mountainous. Purely a rich guy sport, which Sparta excelled in because it had a shitload of slaves to do all the actual work.

Annual Helot hunts. New warriors were sent out to kill as many Helots as they could in one night. Otherwise not more than other greeks.
