This happened a couple of days ago. I am graduating school this year and my school does an award ceremony on the last day before holidays and final exams.

I am a fairly high achiever when it comes to academics and the awards ceremony was going well for me as I was awarded a few certificates and trophies for my efforts.

The fuck up occurs at the end of the ceremony when I am awarded my final award before going backstage to get my photo taken however I was aware that the last, and biggest award was announced next and I was a competitor for it. There is very good sound insulation backstage and I was notified that they were announcing the winner of this final award. Peaking from backstage I saw my face and name on the projector and was overjoyed that I had won.

Except I hadn’t.

They had forgot to change from the previous slide and my face was still present from the previous award. By the time I realised that the winner was yet to be announced I was in the middle of the stage, a mindless grin on my face in front of the whole school, all of my peers, my parents and my grandparents.

I must have looked like some sort of cartoon character as I literally did a 180 and sprinted offstage. I heard the gasps as chuckles as I made my way behind the curtain. To make matters worse I in fact didn’t win the award and looked like a bumbling fool. I tried to smile as I got my photo taken for the previous award however my face and ears were boiling as the magnitude of my fuck up settled in.

I finally understood what people meant when they said they wanted to be eaten by the floor. I tried to smile through it and joke about it but I have literally winced at the thought of it for the last few days.

TL;DR: I got up on stage in front of 1000+ people thinking I had won an rather honourable award before realising I hadn’t and now it’s haunting me in my dreams.
