So basically I was just browsing reddit when I saw a post in r/pics from a guy posting his x-ray of his leg where he had brackets and screws keeping his Tibia together after a car accident. Since it was a medical x-ray his name and age were right in the frame of the picture with no attempt to hide it or crop it out. I thought the picture was neat so I jokingly responded with essentially “Pretty neat John Doe age 30”.

I didn’t think there was a problem with this because he shared the information willingly and nobody else did either because I was top post but one reddit user started making a stink about how I needed to delete my comment because it was the right thing to do. Even though I thought it was silly I deleted it anyways to make him happy since it was just a stupid joke. Eventually the picture got removed by the moderators (the moderators apparently had a bigger problem with this guy sharing his personal information than he did himself).

A few hours later I get the message that I’m permenantly banned from reddit for breaking Rule 3 which is about “revealing someone’s personal information” which I guess I did if you were looking for any type of technicality to ban someone. He revealed it himself and didn’t even seem to care. It also begs the question if all the other people in the thread pointing out the personal information in the picture got banned too or if I just got banned because instead of telling everyone exactly where to look in the picture to get that information I just used it as part of a joke.

Tried to appeal and almost instantly got a boilerplate responce saying the ban stays up.

TL;DR Got my 8 year old reddit accont perma banned for making a joke containing the OP’s self divulged name and date of birth.
