It is a bit polarizing. Some don’t like it at all. I did not like it at first, as I did not get the association with Marilyn Monroe, even though I’m familiar with the scent of Chanel N°5. After using the soap sample a couple of times, I decided to buy the EdT, and that changed my mind. Now I know what nuances are there but barely noticeable in the soap and splash.

There are two or three shaves still left in this soap – it will definitely not see 2025.

    Have a good evening!

    November 2, 2024 - Second Luxury Shave ™️

    • Brush: Yaqi - Mysterious Space 2-band badger
    • Razor: Gillette - Super Speed Black Tip
    • Blade: Gillette - 7 O’clock SharpEdge (6)
    • Lather: Stirling - Ramblin’ Man
    • Post: Stirling - Ramblin’ Man AS splash
    • Post: Stirling - Glacial Unscented AS balm
    • Frag: Barrister and Mann - Fougère Aromatique EdT

I just received this Fougère Aromatique EdT today in the mail, and I’m not yet sure what I think. It’s definitely a mossy-earthy scent with an herbal note that I can’t put my finger on. I don’t hate it, but I also don’t immediately love it. I’ll need to sit with this one for a bit.

    • Brush: Elite Razor Neo-resinate 26mm Mother Lode
    • Blade Holder: Tatara Muramasa (setting: 3)
    • Blade: Gillette 7 O’Clock SharpEdge (Yellow) (2)
    • Lather: Barrister and Mann - Amazelnut - Soap
    • Toner: Thayers - Lavender - Toner
    • Aftershave: Noble Otter - Cerberus - Aftershave

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

BaM has such a great catalogue of darker, warmer scents it’s easy to overlook Amazelnut. I certainly did. I bought Amazelnut and Leviathan at the same time. I was so impressed with Leviathan that I went though a tub of it within a year of its purchase. This meant that I neglected a number of soaps during that time, and among them was Amazelnut. This one is more subtle and refined. I don’t see a lot of it come up on the sub, but maybe it deserves more attention than it gets.

    • Brush: AP Shave Co. - 24mm Synbad Fan
    • Razor: Muhle R89
    • Blade: Personna Lab Blue (5)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - You & I (Will Die) - Soap
    • Post Shave: Chatillon Lux - Sni Mato - Aftershave
    • Post Shave: allMan - Refined - Balm

The R89 is more aggressive than I typically like to use. I’m more of a Merkur 34C type of guy. It’s a little bit surprising to me that the “89” series razors became the de facto recommendation for new shavers, although I think over time I’m starting to see some more variety in recommendations. At the same time, I don’t know what I would recommend to someone new… the 89 series razors are ubiquitous, and relatively inexpensive. I’ve never tried a Maggard V3M but it looks exactly like a Baili BR171 which I like a lot.

    Anyway, good shave!

The soap isn’t very strongly scented, but it smells quite nice. I’ve mentioned before that on some days I get a strange sort of smell from the soap, sort of like an off-gassing from something. I’ve had the same thing from Mood Indigo, so maybe there’s a common accord in both of them. Strangely, it depends on the day.

There’s a sort of maturity to the scent. I’m curious what it might smell like in fragrance form. It seems approachable, but not mainstream, if that makes sense.

Hmm. Interesting that you mentioned Indigo. That’s my favorite HoM scent, and also a miss for me in its description (leaving a blues club). I get none of that vibe. Similarly, for You and I (Will Die): “an exploration of the fragile impermanence of humanity”. WTF?

    Sat 02 Nov 2024

    • Brush: Boti Motherlode knot in laminated wooden handle, 30mm
    • Razor: Blutt Rasur – BR-1 (0.99 mm gap)
    • Blade: Feather - new Hi-Stainless
    • Lather: Southern Witchcrafts – Valley of Ashes
    • Post Shave: Southern Witchcrafts, Shawn Maher – Gravefruit II

I’m copying @[email protected]’s SOTD of last Saturday because the scent combo sounded interesting, and also because I liked his SOTD picture (I wasn’t alone in that and it became the sub’s side bar picture of this week).

VoA is one of the most difficult scents for be to place. u/Jimtasticness used to describe it as clean dirt and that’s a good way to put it. There’s something about the citrus and tobacco that makes the coal, tar, motor oil, diesel, burning rubber, and smoke nice. Combining it with Gravefruit is fun, because by contrast, mostly the bright grapefruit and yuzu of it come through.

The BR-1 is probably objectively my best DE razor. Super efficient, just enough blade feel to guide you as you find your angle, super gentle. A foolproof design. But it’s also no very exciting to use IMO, a bit like the Henson. Not sure what to make of that.

Great setup! The BR-1 is on tap for my second luxury shave today, but I plan to switch out the 0.99 plate for the 0.86 plate. I really enjoy the simplicity and elegance of the design of this razor. I don’t see it like a Henson, though I have not used a Henson. My impression is that the Henson is much more restrictive on angle choice between cap and safety bar.
