There are a few types of “AI” generated art that I enjoy but they’re relatively niche (usually surreal, more or less obviously has a human purposefully guiding it with a style/angle - eg actually using it as a tool rather than content slop generator), but by and large it’s much more common to come across uncanny valley or straight-up disturbing products nowadays. And much of it cookie-cutter. tbh I’m very limited on social media/wider common internet useage and tailor my feeds highly selectively/avoid as much as possibly the ones that push algorithmic content but even so the slop spills over sometimes. That said I just Can’t watch the “AI” gen videos that CGTN sometimes puts out but the good thing is that they follow Chinese laws and very obviously demarcate “this is ‘AI’ generated” so it’s easy to avoid it. Can’t say the same about other places - I briefly looked back at pinterest a couple months ago (back in the day I had curated some moodboards with friends) and it was just unusable.

Speaking of, western media (including social media) has a history of appropriating images from unrelated contexts to generate mountains of atrocity propaganda especially regarding China and specifically XUAR. Can’t wait for East Turkestan Government in Exile and other US Congress/NED/CIA backed groups to start using “AI” to fabricate atrocity propaganda, can only hazard a guess they might use footage from real active genocides (eg currently committed by Isreal) to generate such atrocity propaganda, then passed off as real by western mainstream media /sarcasm (But yeah as someone else already noted, coulda been doing this in photoshop all along. AI would just make it faster particularly for video formats, which makes selling the fabrications as real easier)

I put “AI” in this context in quotes because it’s anything but “intelligent”, in the sense of General Artificial Intelligence. Learning Machine? eh, shakey, it can only reflect biases inherent to its training data, can’t escape or grow away from it. Big Data Doohickey? sure. Calling “generative content/content detection machines that use training data” -> “AI” was such a techbro upselling to venture capitalists thing and I hate it. sorry for random rant

the ai used for those png lip syncing looks just like shit from the year 2000 where you have to put markers on a picture so that it’d move them and make the image look like it’s talking, like imagine the image becoming mush to contort the lips in there to move. i can’t even find a proper image that conveys that tbh. anyone remembers the “princess jane” twitter thing? if that was made in the late 2000s people would go “this is funny home video”, not “HOLLYWOOD WILL DIE AND WE WILL RULE THE MOVIE WORLD WITH UNLIMITED CREATION IN OUR FINGERTYPES”

i know you mean the ones a la dream machine whatever and i agree, those feel extremely uncanny, everything morphs and melts and most of the time it doesn’t even know what to do so it ends up making shit up

videos about ai either go “HOW TO MAKE MONEY” or “FUNNY NSFW FREE, TALK TO ANY AN ANIME !” instead of “this is really cool”. china does a good job at using ai for anything but slop, don’t forget that china stay winning

all of that electricity and water wasted on shit like “REMOVE CLOTHES FREE IN IMAGE” to get disgusting without any form of consent (don’t forget csam, as the original poster mentioned! why the fuck) and “simpsons live action” where homer changes his face every single time and the computer has no clue how to make lisa’s hair spikes so it’s always changing in every shot. we are speeding up the warmth of earth for slop. this is how we will die. not from cool robits, but from water sources drying up, electricity being at maximum usage at all times due to ai centers, causing so much pollution from the current system of generating power (fossil fuels, nuclear power) and earth just losing its last breath from all the heat and all that jazz, i am tired sorry for being incoherent

And the worst part is that one day very soon, this technology is going to used to start making videos of people commiting crimes. Sickos have already used it to homemake CP

If it helps frame this, those same sicko’s where already doing this through stuff like photoshop and the like, its not really creating new creeps, just lowering the effort > outcome of it all.

It’s very obvious that this problem is only going to escalate, millions of people are calling for regulation or rules, but the scumbags engineering the tech remain anonymous and completely unhindered in their efforts.

Yeah whats going to happen IMO is that companies will hollow out creatives gradually by firing them/letting them go when AI advances to the stage that it can recreate the labor they would be doing to create the same product. HOWEVER what I think will happen as a consequence of this is that…the products will just be shit and no one will buy or care about them, and the companies will collapse as the shareholders/AI grifters escape with all of the surplus labor value.

You gotta remember the inherent restrictions AI generative stuff actually has; it cannot by function make a ‘new’ work of art, just regurgitate previous works of art and reshape them slightly. Truely ‘new’ art will not come from AI, and that will be the value artists will retain, as that requires abstractions, and more importantly; human experience to create.

Fundamentally all art is a story about a human being, no AI is ever going to make me shed a tear.
