What the fuck is wrong with people? I genuinely hope these people are found, prosecuted and banned from football and social media.
Social media is built on this type of crap unfortunately, we as a species are not better than this sadly.
It’s not just social media. These are things you hear everywhere from playgrounds to pubs. It’s definitely a societal issue rather than a technological one.
That said, rightly or wrongly, it’s on Arteta to get ahead of this. He knew how toxic the fanbase was when he took over and he saw how things were reverting to that in the past few weeks and rather than address the fanbase with some honesty, he’s talking about dominance and blaming balls. It’s essentially him sticking his head in the sand.
Every time I hear about folks threatening people over anything like this I feel sad at how backwards people are sometimes.
In the Netherlands, there was a dude who tried driving his car into a crowd during the celebration of the Queen’s birthday. Somehow, the identity of the gentleman got out. He died due to the impact of his car on something that did not get out of the way.
So this dude was sent death threats. I might be inclined to agree that one generally shouldn’t drive their car into a group of festive people. Buuuut… If you go around sending death threats to someone who is confirmed to be deceased after their misguided attempt to inflict harm… I can’t be on your team.
This is of course an edge case but threatening Kai’s wife makes no sense to me. I would draw the line at sending Kai a message saying: ‘hey dude, you should’ve scored at least one of those. Get back on that horse and good luck in the future’.
Threatening people online is an example of how sick society has gotten and how much mental health is a problem of which we all need to contribute to for our own sense of wellbeing.
That said, Arsenal fans are deluded. We keep running around with a sense of entitlement like we have dominated something. The reality is that we’ve defended the FA Cup twice and nothing else. Every other success we’ve had has been sporadic. The reality that Arsenal fans need to accept is that we’re prestigious for a multitude of reasons, our brand of football, our class, the fact that we’re always there or there abouts. But our history has glaring deficiencies, the lack of defended title, the lack of European success. I’m at a loss as to why we deserve to win.
Even the expectations on Havertz make no sense. Liverpool got European success with a striker that contributed less than Havertz. Havertz is top 3 in terms of goals and top 2 in terms of goal contributions in the league. Yet I see fans clamouring for Osimhen who is perpetually injured. How does that move us forward? We don’t play with midfielders or wingers who feed through balls. Our actual issue over recent weeks, in fact this whole season has been how pedestrian our passing has been and that’s in part because we’ve been trying to shoehorn Rice at left 8 and have been playing Partey at 6.
Yeah I gotta say I just saw this post and felt like contributing, so cards on the table I’m not a huge Gunners fan or anything and I don’t exactly follow the Premier League due to the abysmal coverage in my country.
That said, I did catch the Man U match. Man U has some decent quality here and there and so does Arsenal, yet I was very underwhelmed with both sides. But in general, looking at the state of European football by and large, I feel like I’m underwhelmed a lot.
Teams are more interested in playing for minimum results. It seems to be a trend that first halves are super boring, no risk anywhere, no real pressure off the ball… It feels like the main objective is not to concede any goals. This makes the second halves more interesting, but you might also get a lot of goalless draws.
To compare, I also watched El Clásico yesterday. Aside from the fact that having yet another cup in such a busy season and that this one is the least significant, and skating over the fact that the final was played in Jeddah for some reason: Madrid showed some of the worst football I’ve seen all season. Barça played with guts, with fun, with dare and it payed off because the players had both quality and determination. I saw a team playing a great game. Real seemed to be going through the motions of the game and the amount of hard fouls in the late game showed a total lack of control.
I also watch a lot of Italian football and especially the matches that are promoted as being interesting fixtures often are so disappointing. The most interesting thing that can happen is a bottom end team beating a team in the mid of the table, or one of the top teams just does not bring it at all and you get to see some counters.
I don’t know if it was always like this, but the state of football seems to be deteriorating across the board.
Sports are supposed to be an entertaining distraction. WTF?
