Have you managed to sort out a way to remain as connected to the city as you were before? If you are enjoying Lemmy/kbin, what stands out as something you would appreciate seeing more of in the Calgary community here?
I would be interested in getting more of a niche community going as I do really enjoy Lemmy overall and appreciate the somewhat slower pace as well. Curious if others feel a need for something like this and thoughts around it!
I honestly never found the other site to be all that useful for staying connected to local info. It was ok, but also just a lot of weather, pics, and rants. I’ve been following #yyc on Mastodon and this community. Plus CBC local.
The other community you mention is unhealthy. I hope this one doesn’t become the same, but I feel like it’s only a matter of time…
I think we chatted about this before, but I thought it was a well known phenomenon that communities based on location select for people that butt heads, and communities based on interests are better for selecting for people that have things in common and get along.
Might be better strategy to establish a Calgary or Alberta politics forum to act as a sacrificial anode and forward those discussions there.
I don’t think it’s the politics. Alberta politics are always spicy. And yes, COVID was definitely a weird time, a time when we found out some of our friends and neighbours might actually be insane. But I can participate on my hometowns sub, no problems. Same with Albertas sub, it was definitely a left wing echo chamber, but I could still shrug it off. I don’t disagree that they are always sort of weird places, you are right on that. But I’m not sure you can peg r/Calgary to just that though. IMO, it was super duper bad moderation, and overall shitty behaviour by them and some other aggro users. Which in turn led to all the old school users abandoning it, then leading to whatever it really is nowadays, which is a literal piece of shit. Reddit moderation is an actual problem. Actually Reddit itself is an actual problem, the world’s the better for it’s decline. As a sidenote, I also like how theres no collected karma, you can judge comments for what they are, not who they are. You don’t have to make comments to try and gather positive karma. That’s whats going to make this community a better place, again IMO.
I definitely agree Reddit is not great. I wish I had more time to post content here because it’s better already and could use some more.
Should add that I’d love to be wrong on this though.
Honestly, just here. The rest I let serendipity and socialising with people be my news. Social events are in full swing and I’m seeing people every day so just asking people what’s up has been great.
Lately I learned the MardaLoop Community association gives a bunch of little discounts to businesses, and I can’t wait for the community pool to be open.
For things like traffic I use google maps, better to find out exactly where the traffic problems are than wait for a radio to eventually tell me where there is traffic somewhere else in the city.
honestly, lemmy is the only local news for me right now. I still use the other one, but mostly for bird related stuff cause im that crazy bird guy and cant get enough dino pics.
It really feels better here
