I managed to get it working, but I think the issue wasn’t the file size and rather the image dimensions. My image had 1000x1000, scaling it to 250x250 fixed it.
(That correlates of course, but the 1000x1000 was already only around 200kb)
This stems from how other instance admins reported issues with scalability of Lemmy’s multimedia storage, and the fact it can inflate cloud costs very much.
I still have this issue, I get an error saying
You may try compress the picture to less than 100kb. Mine is less than 50kb already.
