minus-squaretriprotic@lemmy.calinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up22·1 year agoIn the UK there’s a card game “top trumps”: https://toptrumps.com/home/ Also in various card games (with a standard 52 card deck), like bridge, beating one hand with a better hand would be said to have one hand ‘trump’ another. I hate that there’s a shady guy out there that has that word so tied to him.

minus-squareMarmaladeMermaid@lemm.eelinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up5arrow-down2·1 year agoI’ve heard that in the UK “Trump” is old person slang for a fart and has been since before the American Trump family was well known.
minus-squarePaleRider@feddit.uklinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up4·1 year agoIt is indeed but it’s also used in a lot of card games to describe one hand that trumps (beats) another…
minus-squareryno364@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up4·1 year agoSometimes I think headlines try to find any excuse to put the word “trump” in. Ya know for various reasons…
minus-squarenevernevermore@kbin.sociallinkfedilinkarrow-up6arrow-down3·1 year agoHave you played many card games? Trump cards are ones that beat any other card in a hand.
minus-squareBertramDitore@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up13arrow-down2·1 year agoI’m aware of trump cards in card games. I’d just never heard “comes up trumps” as a turn of phrase. Made no sense to me in the context of a tv show.
