Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard was awarded the Velo d'Or trophy for the season's best cyclist, but the Danish rider skipped the ceremony in Paris on Tuesday.
Not a fan of that outcome. Can you be the “best” cyclist if you don’t enter, let alone win any one day races?
He’s unquestionably the best stage racer, but that’s not what the award is for. Just crowning the TDF winner has the lazy reek of giving the winning quarterback the superbowl MVP.
I would have gone for Pog myself because he was constantly in the mix against the best stage racers AND the best one day guys this year, unprecedented in the modern era.
Mvpd I think could have done more for himself by doing more than lead outs in stage races, but he’s a double monument winning double world champion for goodness’ sake.
