Having a debate with an Italian guy about who is the bigger club and I think it’s close.
Both have won their domestic league 19 times and Milan have 1 more Champions League.
Milan probably have more well known legends like Van Basten, Kaka, Maldini, Gullit and Pirlo. But in recent years Liverpool have had Gerrard, Suarez, Alonso, VVD and Salah.
The current popularity of the Premier League helps Liverpool but Milan also has a huge fanbase.
Milan has a bigger stadium, better known legends, play in an affluent city, and has great history and traditions.
Liverpool is worth billions more , has more fans, and is better on the pitch. They also have the history and traditions.
It’s a tough question to answer.
I don’t really think its fair to say Milan more famous players at all.
I’m not sure where the “bigger legends” thing is coming from. Souness, Dalglish, Rush, Barnes, Hansen and Keegan are some of the best players to ever play in England.
Then there’s the semi-recent players like Gerrard, Carragher, Owen, Fowler, Suarez and Alonso who were all great players. Even more recent there’s Mane, Firmino and Coutinho who are some of the best to play in the Premier League. Currently there’s Alisson, Van Dijk and Salah who are all time greats.
I’m sure you could do a similar list for Milan and I’m not saying Liverpool’s legends are definitely “better”, but I don’t think the conversation can just be brushed under the carpet.
Yeah but none of those English legends won any kind of NT trophies or the Ballon d’or so they aren’t on the same level as the Milan legends.
Slippy G-Had and Carra never won the league. Only Souness, Rush and Keegan were deemed good enough by true European giants to play for them. Hansen was incredibly overrated. I only ever hear pundits and true legends mention Keegan out of your list. The rest are only club legends, not football legends.
Dalglish isn’t a football legend?
The fact that you say “Slippy G” says it all. Your opinion is irrelevant.
That’s like saying Inesta, Xavi, Messi, Busquets… no European giants deemed them good enough. That Liverpool side was 2x as successful as the peak Barcelona side. Let that set in
Except Barca
Hansen over rated? If you like.
I said in our subreddit but: since berlusconi bought milan, not one Liverpool player will go into a combined 11 of the two teams.
I have some idiots try and say vvd is close to baresi and my brain explodes.
Not sure when that was but even if we say last 20 years or so, off the top of my head Suarez does 100% and probably Alisson. There’s arguments for Van Dijk, Salah and Gerrard.
Callagher and them lil buddies are cool until we bring out Maldini, Costacurta, Baresi. And that’s just Italian CBs. Milan is clear on this front. At least to me. There are club icons/legends. And then there are all time greats, Milan has had more of those in my opinion.
If we go back to Alan Hansen and all they wont be clear.the thing is they were prominent very back.definetly if we ask about these milan legends in 70 years no one will remember them too.
Sorry to burst your bubble but no kid nowadays has ever heard of souness, dalgish, rush, barnes, hansen and Keegan.
Barnes is one of the most influential black footballers of all time, if nothing else. Rush is Liverpool’s all time top scorer, Dalglish is a legend outside of football for his Hillsborough work and Souness is Britain’s greatest ever midfielder. If you haven’t heard of them then you need to brush up on your football history, or you’re just ignorant.
How is the prosperity of the city they play in relevant?
I also don’t think prosperity is the right word, but the point remains that Milan is the bigger city of the two
Liverpool has around 500K population, while Milan is almost triple that, and around a 3.5M metropolitan area around it, and with several global brands headquartered there etc etc
Define the criteria, add a 1-5 value for each then total them up?
Crit:
Legends City History Traditions Value Fans Current form
?
Better on the pitch is just current…not the most important criteria for overall bigger club I’d think
You pretty much answered to the question with those points
besides maldini who are milan’s well know (e.g. household name) legends? definitely think liverpool has more
What the fuck
The whole 2005 milan are well known legends
Which is ironic because Liverpool beat them in the final that year.
How old are you? Don’t mean it as a bad thing, but there’s so many legendary names that played for Milan.
The Milano Generation comprised of Marco van Basten, one of the greatest strikers of all time, Ruud Gullit, who could play every position on the pitch except keeper, Frank Rijkaard, one of the two greatest defensive midfielders of all time, Paulo Maldini, the greatest full-back of all time, Franco Baresi, one of the greatest centre-backs of all time, managed by Arrigo Sacchi, the founder of pressing and later manager Fabio Capello, who won the Scudetto unbeaten in his first season succeeding Arrigo, is frequently considered the greatest club team in the 20th century and sometimes the greatest team of all time.
