Hello, everyone. Sorry for being such a noob here but I am switching over to 4g broadband again next week and I have been told that I will not longer be able to remotely access my DVR or mini home server since the provider does not give a public ip address like a traditional broadband provider. Am I correct in saying Tailscale would resolve this issue somehow and allow me to view my camera system remotely?
I currently use dynamic dns, which I assume will now be redundant.
Thanks in advance.
It should work - I have a 4g backup Internet connection, that is the same… its great for when I’m away, I have a couple of VMs running Tailscale that route specifically through this… in addition, I have some smart plugs that connect through it, that allow me to power cycle my main router and servers.
How long did it take you to set it all up? When it comes to all this I am literally starting from scratch so I hope it’s as simple as installing software without any programming or complex configuration involved.
I brought a cheap 4g WIFI router from Ali Epxress foe about £20… the headset part was just getting the SIM setting, everything else was easy… but I’ve not tied the 4G directly into my network, rather it’s just acting like a wireless hotspot…
Being off the main network is what makes it so useful from a backup perspective.
You will be behind CGNAT and a VPN will work yes but you will need to run a VPN client on each of your remote devices.
