Business grade displays built for advertising or showcases tend to be dumb. “Gaming monitors” also cut out a lot of the “smart” features.

Unfortunately, the consumer doesn’t want to pay for dumb displays. They’ll take their ad/subscription subsidised cheap TVs over any simple, dumb solution, driving up the cost of developing simple solutions while also making their own lives worse.

If you’re willing to mess with the internals of your TV (don’t kill yourself by touching the exposed power supply, even if you disconnected the mains!) you can try to find an LVDS controller for your TV’s panel and turn it into a super dumb display. You’ll probably lose e-ARC and other niceties, but you won’t ever see a popup about software updates again.

Thanks, that’s great and useful advice.

It would be cool if all TVs were just dumb displays + a standardized dedicated spot for a module for whatever internals you want to put in it.

Maybe I should petition the EU for this lol. cuts down on e-waste.
