Have had eggs explode in the microwave when I didn’t do this. Usually don’t need to prick an egg if poaching it in the open so to speak.

It worked a couple of times but one time the egg white exploded all over the inside of the microwave. Not sure if it was because it built up too much heat and caused a hot air pocket to form. Yoke was still intact though.
