I am gonna be watching a play next week and there is no way I am doing it sober. I also don’t wanna get blitzed all at once before the show and slowly crash into the wasteland of reality with time. I would like to slowly and steadily drink during the event.
I am not worried about the part involving sneaking the alcohol in. I will have to figure that out on my own.
My main concern is the choice of alcohol and how to drink it.
On paper, something clear like vodka or white rum mixed in water seems ideal since just by looking one cannot tell it apart from water. But the stench is quite unmistakeable so I am open to suggestions on what to drink.
Regarding how to drink it, the smell of the alcohol makes it a bit difficult to drink while watching. If I pop open my bottle/container the smell might give me away. I really don’t know how people around me would react to that so I wanna avoid that. Other option is to drink in the washroom or something but that would require me to get up every 20-30minutes which seems suboptimal. Maybe if I use one of those sipper bottles I can drink during the show without the drink making contact with open air? Again, open to suggestions on this front too.
One of these bad boys:
Go in alpha with some tall bois. They come in abvs from 4 to 10 now so you can easily make due with one if you want.
Also, and I can’t stress this enough, you need to wait until it’s dead quiet to crack it open. The more brazen about it you are the less likely anyone will say anything.
This kinda if brazenness happened at a play I saw. I don’t think the guy fully understood the concept of theatre and when the actor came to the edge of the stage and started speaking, the guy in the audience thought it was directed at them, so answered back. The actor just rolled with it. But there was a lot of backlash from the audience lol.
That’s hilarious.
Actor: To be or not to be.
Guy : be I guess
Obama: Uh, let me be be.
As long as you’re watching adults perform, there should be no issue with just bringing a few shooters and adding them to your drinks. Theater people love watching and performing under the influence of alcohol, it’s the oldest theater tradition.
Literally just buy a few double shooters to make mixed drinks and make sure you have a ride home, you’re overcomplicating this any other way. Trying to make alcohol consumption discrete when you know everybody probably smells it and probably doesn’t care about drinking makes you look worse than just drinking.
What’s a shooter?
Edit: nvm found it https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooter_(drink)
Like gas station shots.
People buy shots at garages?
Yeah, gas station by my house does 50 cent shots of good vodka. In America, most good liquor stores are also gas stations.
You know there were beer-drinking peasants in the Globe Theater’s cheap seats laughing along to Shakespeare’s comedies. Pay a few pence, BYOB, and enjoy the show. Some things never change.
If that’s Shen Yun, just chug a lot of vodka, fast.

What’s the play? I’ve been to a lot of plays and the vast majority of them I had no desire to see, actively dreaded losing those 2-3 hours of my life, yet almost always came out enjoying.
Of course it could just be truly awful.
I really have no idea. I just know the name.
Where I live is culturally pretty dead. There is an “art festival” every year where stuff like this happens. I’m just going for the novelty.
Ah I see. Amateur dramatics. I would load a couple of bottles of red wine into one of those platypus water backpacks and get utterly rat-arsed in that case.
It’s not amateur theatre. The performers are professionals (not to be confused with good) but performers like them only come here once a year.
I went to one of these in the past as well and they had a prominent Bollywood actor performing. I don’t like movies but it was cool to see for once.
just fyi it would be super rude and draw tons of attention to you to leave the theatre even once during the performance to go to the bathroom lol
like obviously if you really have to piss it’s fine to get up and go but everyone is gonna notice. it’s possible that the ushers will ask you to wait for a scene change or even an act break to let you back to your seat. if you left the performance more than once the actors and the patrons will remember you.
Why can’t you just watch it sober?
I can but I don’t want to
I guess getting shitfaced beforehand is your better option, then, for whatever reason you want to be drunk during the play
Vodka and Gin are the only ones I know of that don’t have a smell. So prolly just a vodka mixer would work best.
I’ll try gin or vodka then. Which one smells less?
Vodka smells less; but gin tastes better afaic
Vodka it is then
I think they both smell the same / aren’t supposed to have any odors. But I can’t stand gin so I’d go with vodka.
Will drinking be frowned upon? In the plays I’ve been to, people arrive early for a drink in the bar, and take one in, then have a drink in the intermission(s) and take another one in. They’re in plastic cups, which is understandable, but it’s certainly part of the evening.
I 80% sure it will be frowned upon. It’s in a small Indian city. Think of a “The Nightman Cometh” kind of deal.
I feel like if you have a seltzer water or something, you can bring in some of those mini-bottles of vodka, tho I feel that white rum may smell less. Other than that, maybe bring mints. My brother says Whiskey and Arnold Palmer because he claims it will smell slightly less like alcohol, I’m skeptical tho. Good luck trying, you’ll probably be able to
Does the theater not serve drinks? If they do and you can get away with one, buy one. Covertly refilling it would be indistinguishable from you just nursing one drink for the entire performance.
You could also use a base with a strong scent. Colas, Dr. Pepper, orange soda, etc. may have enough smell to hide your habit from those around you.
I feel for you. Nothing beats a good drink. However, in cases like this, perhaps edible cannabis is better. No smell, discreet, and enough to “just take the edge off” (for me) is about the size of a breath mint. Have some while you’re waiting in line to get in and enjoy the show.
Spiked coffee in a thermos flask? The smell of coffee could manage to cover the smell of alcohol.
