I’m incredibly excited to have this new machine. I’ve been waiting since I ordered on Dec.29th after returning several other computers due to compatibility issues. This laptop works like a dream.
Lemur Pro i7 1355U 40GB DDR5 1TB PCIE4 Pop!_OS 256GB PCIE3 Windows 11 1080p 60hz Display HDMI 2.1 Thunderbolt 4
It’s so light and sleek I love it! I can’t believe how thin and light this thing is. The case is simple and beautiful as well. Ports galore for an ultra portable. Pop!_OS was preinstalled, and installing Windows to the m.2 drive I threw in when I got it was a breeze. The drivers and full spec/repair database they provide is such a breath of fresh air from the horrible service you get from companies like Dell.
If I had to complain I wish they had used easy access bottom panel ports so you don’t have unscrew all 12 screws to access things like RAM and m2 slots. The “System 76” logo on the front is decal’d on instead of being a more seamless graphic like you’d find from major brands.
Minor gripes. I love this thing. It’s fast, light, quiet, and the battery life is nuts.
Man, I wouldn’t let a Windows install within 30 feet of that thing if it were me.
Unfortunately I had to for GeForceNow which is where I do all my gaming. Browser only supports 1080p/60. I need my 1440p or 4k 120hz. I can’t do 60hz anymore.
The minute Nvidia ever does a Linux port that Windows install is GONE.
Why the down votes? Completely reasonable response
I’ll have to look when I get home but I swear I have a geforcenow app on my Garuda install out of the box… Or maybe it’s subject to the same limitations (or even is browser based itself).
I am curious why you have to or choose to exclusively play games via geforcenow though?
I love the convenience of cloud gaming and not having to keep up on the insanely overpriced GPU market. It’s such a fantastic service. I get zero latency, and it feels like completely native hardware.
There is an electron port of GFN that’s just a chromium web wrapper. Doesn’t bypass any of the browser limitations.
Why would use geforce/Nvidia with a laptop that’s built for linux?
That’s awesome! The system76 stuff looks so cool.
There’s a guy who has one at my coding hangouts. It looks really slick and definitely my next laptop!
How well does it run after you ground it up?
HEYO!
I prefer Linux mint, but I did for about half a year use Pop!_OS and it is a really solid distro.
Also, honestly how often due you need to disassembled your system and the logo just needs some sticker friends https://www.stickermule.com/unixstickers
Really glad for you, hope you enjoy your new laptop.
Hey thanks for the link. $1 and free shipping for 10 Linux stickers. Hard to beat that.
Nice! The hardware is solid! Had mine for almost 2 years. Screen brightness does what it needs to. Battery life is great and the laptop is very light. Does heat up a lot while charging and i wish the keyboard felt a little more sturdy…
Running with Mint and gnome has been fine, but considering a switch to Fedora and KDE.
How do you feel about Gentoo?
I’ll tell you in a week when it’s done compiling
Congrats! I have a Galago Pro and a Gazelle that I purchased several years ago. They both work great and I am very happy with them. Love how open s76 is with all the documentation and software support. Have been considering ordering a desktop from them with an AMD GPU as a gaming machine. Enjoy the laptop!
Very nice! I was just looking at reviews on this. Really nice machine in every way, except maybe for the camera, and minor points off for the display being “only” 1080p. I have a lovely framework 13", but am jealous of the Lemur’s battery life.
I prefer 1080p 60hz laptop displays. Much lighter on the battery. I plug it into an external 120hz HDR 4k display when I need the crispiness or extra workflow.
Very interesting. Do you have any more info about the relationship between 1080p/60hz and battery? It sounds intuitively true, I’d just like to learn more.
I’m not the guy, and this is not really an information source, but Android seems to agree that higher resolution and higher refresh rate uses more power, which seems intuitive to me as well.
(Settings > Display > Screen resolution)
(Settings > Display)
Higher resolution and refresh rates use more battery. You can search around if you want specifics.
What kind of noise does that emit in idle and during high cpu usage?
I don’t have a decibel reading for you but it sounds about the same as my MacBook Air did during load.
MacBook Air
Which model? :) The current Macbook Airs don’t have fans.
The last one I had did have a fan. I think it was the M1 model?
M1 does not but the m1 pro does and looks fairly similar if you get the smallest size.
Haha, I didn’t realize they were asking how loud it was. I thought they expected you type out the noises. I feel like Kel.
I have one for work and I’ll say it’s high, sometimes. Can sounds like a jet engine.
My Darter does not have that issue, though.
The plight of active cooling in a ultra portable.
very happy with my pangolin, at some point I need to dig up the documentation and find out if I can fix a key or not but overall great hardware
Looking at laptops right now, that thing would be the obvious choice for me if it had either an oled display or ethernet on top of that battery…
I prefer 1080p 60hz laptop displays. Much lighter on the battery. I plug it into an external 120hz HDR 4k display when I need the crispiness or extra workflow.
The Ethernet issue is corrected by my docking station.
1080p 60 is fine, but if I have to go back to the dongle life for ethernet I at least want the extra battery life oled would give me as a consolation prize. Good to hear you’re happy with it though
I hear OLED is worse for the battery, or was that specific to the Thinkpad X1C10?
you could probably retrofit an oled with some effort
Last time I was checking out laptops Slimbook looked really good but I eventually just got desktop Vant (which also has nice laptops).
If I had to complain I wish they had used easy access bottom panel ports so you don’t have unscrew all 12 screws to access things like RAM and m2 slots.
How often are you switching those out where you want quick access?
