Here’s a zero-cost plan to migrate the road network over to metric: have a transition period where signs may be shown in either unit, then require all replacement signs to be shown as metric. Since all signs must eventually be replaced, over a long enough period of time the whole network will become metric without any marginal cost increase.

The only downside is that for a time, people have to understand both units and how they relate to each other.

As a counterpoint, I’ve bought loads of really good cycling accessories from AliExpress. It’s not impossible to buy high-quality things from China - this is after all where a large part of everything is manufactured these days - you just have to be careful not to fall for the offers that are just obviously too good to be true.

I think that would be against the terms of the policy for the types of insurance you can get here in Sweden, so basically another level of fraud. But yeah, that makes sense, you could double/triple-dip and get ahead that way.

I guess you’d still have a scratched car at that point, though. Maybe you need to combine it with a dishonest repair shop massively inflating the bill, along with an insurance company that doesn’t pay enough attention.

I’m struggling to see how this scam is actually supposed to work - if your car sustains damage, wouldn’t your insurance just cover the cost to repair that damage, meaning you are just back at square one?

Layers - get a good base layer, merino wool is the gold standard for these. You also want to get a neck gaiter, plus some merino wool socks, and some kind of cap. These will keep you warm and dry throughout most cold weather. Add more layers on top when outside, and remember to remove layers proactively if you feel yourself starting to sweat - it’s never a good idea to be wet in cold weather. The base layer will make physical exertion a pretty hot affair quite fast, so you’d be surprised how fast the sweat starts pouring.

The problem is most often the infrastructure quality making it a less attractive option.

One way would be to actually charge road users what it costs to use the roads instead of giving them away for free (inb4 gas tax mentioned - it doesn’t even come close to covering the costs).

A reasonable scheme would tax vehicles to the fourth power of their weight, as this is a good enough proxy for how much road wear that particular vehicle incurs.

This would immediately make yank tank-style vehicles unviable, and the trucking industry would basically need to transition to rail right away, but it would be a far fairer system than what’s in place today.

The money generated could be used to fund high-quality public transit infrastructure, improving the overall system for everyone involved.
