- Chinese citizens’ seemingly popular attitudes toward their government as party propaganda gained in direct surveys -and covered by China Central Television, Xinhua, China Global Television Network, China Dailyand other state-controlled outlets- provide a false narrative as survey respondents conceal their opposition to the regime due to the threat of repression.
- Deeper analyses find that Chinese citizens are far more fearful of expressing opposition to the regime under its leader Xi Jinping than in other autocracies, suggesting that observers should be sceptical about public opinion surveys in China that rely on direct questioning.
- The [Chinese Communist Party] CCP’s sprawling internal security apparatus compels citizens to engage in widespread self-censorship, at a rate nearly three times higher than in Vladamir Putin’s Russia.
- Researcher say the CCP confronts widespread frustration. Its recent policies, including the increase in repression and sabre-rattling over Taiwan, should be seen as an effort to contain this frustration.
[Edit typo.]
Wh-what?? No, I was told that the Chinese government had a 95% approval rating by tankies!
Ahhhh, that was a typo. What they meant to say was “the Chinese government has a 95% approval rating among tankies!”
Everyone knows its 105%, traitor!
-10,000 social credit for me
The other 5% are in camps.
Those silly sillies go there willingly, because they totally want to be properly educated, it’s definitely not some sort of concentration camp with forced labor!
That’s not their approval rating, just their home ownership rate.
On land leased from the government.
Will someone convert these heathens to capitalism already. Don’t they understand that you are only suppose to lease from private individuals and corporations, it just works.
Now you’re being told different from a PR firm in Oregon.
A govt that tightly controls flow of information, even at the individual level by using and abusing of the police, is not actually liked??? No way! I’m utterly shocked!! Who could’ve predicted that??
A government not popular, especially a totalitarian one? No way, really? I am shocked!
Well, not shocked, but…
What’s the opposite of shocked?
It’s one thing to make a reasonable assumption/prediction about how things probably are based on surrounding circumstances.
It’s quite another thing to have objective, quantifiable data showing how things actually are. Even better if it includes the fine details: the underlying reasons behind the scenes that might not be exactly what we expected.
Nobody finds a report like this surprising, but it is important nevertheless.
With how much talk there is about China invading Taiwan, you’d think they have invaded it ten times already. Then again, maybe this excessive reporting is another “effort to contain frustration”.
The [Chinese Communist Party] CCP’s sprawling internal security apparatus compels citizens to engage in widespread self-censorship, at a rate nearly three times higher than in Vladamir Putin’s Russia.
This sounds like unbiased science from a totally reliable public relations firm in Oregon. \s
